村上春樹氏：ロングインタビュー 僕にとっての＜世界文学＞そして＜世界＞ 第１回＝翻訳の限度は５０年

作家、村上春樹さんがこのほど毎日新聞の単独インタビューに応じた。『海辺のカフカ』（０２年）以来となる大長編小説を執筆中という村上さん。多忙 な時間を割いて、最近翻訳した名作への思いから出版界の古典新訳ブーム、「９・１１」後の時代認識に至るまで幅広く、熱く語った。【構成・大井浩一】
村上さんは創作と並行してアメリカ文学の翻訳、紹介に積極的に取り組んできた。そうした中で、「これだけはやりたいと思っ

ていた」重要な作品が、 サリンジャー『キャッチャー・イン・ザ・ライ』、フィッツジェラルド『グレート・ギャツビー』、チャンドラー『ロング・グッドバイ』（以下では『Ｌ・ Ｇ』）、カポーティ『ティファニーで朝食を』の四つの長編小説。これらを０３年から今年にかけて次々に新訳・刊行した。いずれも各作家の代表作というだけ でなく、高校時代以来、何度も繰り返し読んできた「個人的に好きな」作品でもある。
「フィッツジェラルドはずっと訳してきたけど、それ以外は同時代的なものを中心にやってきた」村上さんが、「古典」に挑むようになった理由は三つ ある。一つは「だんだん翻訳の手ごたえがつかめてきて、そろそろ僕の腕でもできるんじゃないか」と考えたこと。次に「古い翻訳がちょうど『賞味期限切れ』 の時期に来た」タイミング。そして「同時代の新しい作品の翻訳は若い翻訳者がやるべきだ」という考えからだ。
二つ目の理由については、日本語の文体そのものの変化により、「限度は５０年」と話す。今は１９６０年代前後の文学全集ブーム時に盛んに訳された作品が、次々と「期限切れ」を迎えているという。
４作に共通する要素として、村上さんは「都会が舞台になっている」ことを挙げる。確かに『キャッチャー』『ギャツビー』『ティファニー』はニューヨーク、『Ｌ・Ｇ』はロサンゼルスが舞台だ。「結果的に都会小説みたいな文体の作品が僕の翻訳の中心になっていますね」
この「文体」こそ、村上さんが４作それぞれに魅力を感じ、探究してやまないところだ。中でも「チャンドラーの文体にすごくひかれる」と言葉に熱を 込めた。「あの人の文体は何か特別なものを持っている。何が特別なのか昔から疑問だったんだけど、訳してみてもまだ分からないですね」
その文体の秘密に対する強い関心は、『Ｌ・Ｇ』に長文の「あとがき」を執筆したところにも表れている。そこで村上さんは、〈一種のブラックボックスとして設定〉された「自我」の扱いに、〈チャンドラーの創造的な部分〉を見ている。
一方、フィッツジェラルドとカポーティの文体については「とにかくうまい、きれい、リズムがいい、流れる。これに尽きる」と話した。とりわけ フィッツジェラルドからは「文章に対する志の高さ」を得たという。「だから自分の書く小説の文章もまだ直せると思う。それはフィッツジェラルドの文章が僕 にとってスタンダードになっているから」
また、この二人の文章は「僕が書くタイプの文章ではない」と、自らの作品の文体も分析してくれた。「そんなに流麗な文章は僕は書かない。ただ、そういう文章の艶（つや）とかリズムとか流れを、僕はもう少しシンプルな言葉で出したいと思っている」＝つづく
